Biobanking part of Master's programme

In order to introduce students to the topic of biobanking, the German Biobank Node (GBN) cooperates with the Hannover Medical School (MHH). Since the winter semester 2021/22, the online course "Biobanking – Basics for Theory and Practice", which GBN originally developed for biobank employees of the German Biobank Alliance (GBA) as a comprehensive introduction to biobanking, is part of the Master's programme "Biomedical Data Science" at MHH. The programme, which has just started, is aimed at graduates of a bachelor's degree in biosciences or a completed medical degree. The aim of the programme is to train data scientists at the interface of life sciences and medicine. The students learn to generate and handle large, heterogeneous and complex amounts of data and to develop and apply IT solutions – e.g. for disease prevention, precise diagnoses, treatment and therapy decisions and for the evaluation of extensive research data. Knowledge of the work of biobanks and insight into the data collected and processed there is a great advantage for this.

"Biobanking – basics for theory and practice"

Since 2020, GBN has been offering the online course "Biobanking – Basics for Theory and Practice" on the edX education platform for all employees of GBA partner and observer biobanks. It is based on the online course "Biospecimen Research Methods" of the Canadian Office of Biobank Education and Research (OBER) and covers all important topics of biobanking such as receipt, release, storage, processing of biospecimens and data systems. The adaptation of the Canadian course was achieved by the working group "Advanced Education & Training".
