The latest issue of the Journal of Laboratory Medicine (“ahead of print”) compiles numerous articles on biobanking, many of which have been written by GBN and GBA representatives. The topics covered range from automation, IT and data protection to the question of whether a biobank law is needed. In their overview entitled “Biobanks for future medicine”, Prof. Dr. Michael Hummel (Coordinator, GBN) and Dr. Cornelia Specht (Managing Director, GBN) trace the evolution from a fragmented biobank landscape in Germany to a strong network of centralised core facilities. They also provide an outlook of future developments on both the national and European levels.
