Thomas Illig re-elected as deputy GBN spokesperson

Prof. Dr. Thomas Illig, head of the Hannover Unified Biobank (HUB), was re-elected as deputy spokesperson of the German Biobank Node (GBN). His second term as deputy to Prof. Dr. Michael Hummel runs until the end of 2023 – at which time the steering committee (SC) will also be re-elected. The election for deputy speaker took place during an SC meeting on 14 February 2021. It was the second meeting of the SC, which was newly appointed at the beginning of the year.

Thomas Illig has been scientific director of the HUB at Hannover Medical School (MHH) since 2012. From 2016 to 2021, he was also deputy director and research coordinator at the Institute of Human Genetics at MHH. He is a member of the steering committee of the National Pandemic Cohort Network (NAPKON) and head of the NAPKON biospecimen core. NAPKON is a project of the Network University Medicine (NUM) founded in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thomas Illig has many years of experience in biobanking as well as in environmental, molecular and genetic epidemiology. He authored more than 600 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals such as Science, Nature, Nature Genetics, Plos Genetics, Lancet and the American Journal of Human Genetics and is one of the most frequently cited German epidemiologists.
