The National Decade against Cancer, an initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), presents the German Biobank Node (GBN) and the German Biobank Alliance (GBA) with a detailed article on its website, which clearly highlights the importance of biobanks and the biobank alliance for the treatment of cancer patients and for oncological research.
"With the multitude of changes that can be present in tumour cells, it is not always possible to say which of them are the main disease drivers. Only when tumour data of many patients of a tumour entity are collected and analysed, does it become clear which changes occur frequently in this type of cancer or possibly only in a subgroup of those affected and are thus probably essential for the development of the disease. Changes that are found consistently in different types of cancer, on the other hand, can provide an approach for cross-entity forms of therapy. The networking of biobanks could shed more light on these complex relationships."
