“Biobanking – theory and practice”

On 16 March 2020, the German Biobank Node (GBN) will launch an online further education course on the edX platform: “Biobanking – theory and practice”. At first, the course will be available for employees of partner biobanks of the German Biobank Alliance (GBA) only. It is planned to open the course for external participants at a later stage.

A broad introduction to biobanking

“Biobanking – theory and practice” is based on the online course “Biospecimen Research Methods” of the Canadian Office of Biobank Education and Research (OBER). The Canadian version has been translated into German and revised. “Biobanking – theory and practice” is a ten-week programme for employees from all biobank areas, which uses modern learning methods such as videos, quizzes and infographics. Important biobanking topics such as the acceptance, issue, storage, processing of biosamples, or data systems are all part of the course. The programme is particularly suitable for new employees and consists of five modules:

  1. Overview of biosample research
  2. Biosample collection and processing
  3. Storage and provision of biosamples
  4. Data systems and documentation management
  5. Ethics, privacy and consent

Organisational details

After starting the course, a new module will be activated every two weeks. The time required per module is about three to five hours. Please note that there are certain deadlines for all examination quizzes: you must complete them by the beginning of June at the latest. If you successfully complete the course, you will receive a certificate issued by GBN. Another course round is planned for autumn 2020.

Any number of employees can register for each GBA biobank location. If you would like to take part in the course, please send an e-mail to germanbiobanknode@remove-this.charite.de (subject: edX course registration ). You will then receive a confirmation email with further information.
